What Are Internet Scams?Internet scams are very similar to their offline counterparts, they are all designed to separate you from your money or possessions. Internet scams come in many different packages. They can be an offer off of a website, sent to you in an Instant Message screen, or sent to you in an email. Many scammers pose as charities looking for donations. This happens quite frequently after a well know tragedy occurs, like 9/11, The Tsunami, or Hurricane Katrina. Do research on any charity you're planning on supporting as we all want our charitable dollars going where they'll do the most good. The type of scam most often seen is when you receive an email (or some other type of communication) that is apparently from either your own bank, or another type of financial institution, and they are offering you some type of inducement (money, services, etc.) and all you have to do is verify your account or social security number. This should raise a big red flag if this happens to you. One of the best ways to act upon receiving this type of offer is to call your bank and verify that they sent out the email. Yet another type of scam we'd like to list here is from the merchandise end. Many sellers are not offering legitimate goods for sale. They may be counterfeit, broken, or non-existent. The best way to counter these type of sellers is to only use your credit card when making online purchases. With your credit card you have a way of going back and disputing a charge because it came up either short, damaged, or it was just not right. As you can see there are many, many, different Internet based scams around right now. The main thing that will protect you is to always cast a wary eye towards any offers. |
