Top 5 Tips To Avoid Being Scammed

#1 Be Wary Of Contests And Free Offers

Especially when offered by small or unfamiliar companies, many scam marketers first approach their intended victims under the pretense of running a contest or giving away free merchandise.

#2 Make Sure You Know Who It Is That Your Are Dealing With

If you are entering into an agreement to purchase something or donate something online, be sure of who you are entering into that agreement with. If the company name is not immediately recognizable, you may want to verify their business is in good standing. Some venues, such as Amazon and Ebay, have feedback systems showing what previous customers have said about their service. Feedback, though, is no guarantee.

#3 Be Very Skeptical Of Offers Of "Easy Money"

Whether it is a job offer, a business opportunity, or a credit card/loan offer, be wary of any and all offers of "easy money". The lure of easy money is one of the most used tactics of scam artists. You need to remember, if the money was truly that easy then why are they offering it to you?

#4 Guard Your Personal Information / Pay With Credit Cards

These two seem contradictory, but they aren't. When dealing with people on the Internet you need to protect your personal information, especially your Social Security Number as this is the window to your whole identity. When paying for items, the safest thing to do is pay with a credit card as most credit card purchases can be disputed if the seller doesn't hold up to his end of the bargain (misrepresentation of goods, no delivery, etc.). Unless you are 100% sure of whom you are dealing with, never give out any bank account numbers for automatic checks as this can be used again later to take out more funds.

#5 Stay Clear Of High Pressure Come Ons

Most legitimate business will not include things like "act immediately" in their offers. If it sounds like someone wants to rush you into a decision, then it's probably the wrong decision.

It’s true that common sense can protect most of us from being scammed online or off. But, the scammers are getting better at appearing to be people they are not. The more knowledge you have on your side, the less chance that they’ll be successful scamming you.
